Procedure

Children having deformities related to the growth of the face and head often experience multiple problems and it requires the expertise and help from a multidisciplinary team. The latest advancement in craniofacial reconstruction involves early intervention, minimally invasive surgery, single-stage repairs, and continuity. With earlier intervention, the rebuilding work can begin on the face of the child earlier and it is more likely to recuperate with the growth of the child.

Minimally invasive surgery can mean quicker healing, and there will be less risk of any damage to the surrounding tissues, arteries, veins, and nerves. Also, there will be less emotional distress and less pain for the patients and their families. Many craniofacial disorders require more than one surgery, which can be very disruptive for the families and can be costly. Here single-stage surgery can be very helpful that adopts a complex procedure to complete the process I one surgery.

Patients though generally prefer single-stage operation, but since the children are growing, multiple operations may be helpful to correct the craniofacial disorders. The main benefit of treatment for the cleft and craniofacial disorders is that the children gain confidence in the social circles as they grow to adulthood.

Preparation for the surgery

You need to make an appointment at an early stage with a renowned reconstructive surgeon for the treatment of craniofacial abnormalities of your child. The surgeon will explain to you al recommended procedures after checking your child and recommend the next steps. Around two days before the surgery, and staying in the hospital, you should explain to your child about the surgery.

You should be honest in answering the queries of your child and make your child emotionally ready for the surgery. You can visit the facilities of the hospital to understand the capabilities and should ask any question coming into your mind. You also need to discuss all medical conditions of your child, undergo the required medical test of your child, discontinue the medications as recommended by the surgeon and follow all other advice before the surgery.

Post-surgery expectation, recovery, and result

Children after undergoing reconstructive surgery for craniofacial disorders move to the intensive care unit for a day or two as per the recommendation of the surgeon and remain for four to five days. In the case of adults undergoing such reconstructive surgery following trauma, they can go back home after one or two days of operation. However, the total length of the stay in the hospital may vary according to the severity of the case like the severe burn victims may require to stay for several months.

Short term aftercare includes changes in surgical dressing, medications for pain, breathing exercises and antibiotics for reducing any possibility of infection. Surgeons may recommend semi-liquid or soft diets to patients with jaw or mouth injuries and also restrict swimming and active sports for two months for children after reconstructive surgery. It may require having long-term follow up after six to twelve months of the reconstructive surgery for patients with facial trauma.

Children need to have follow-up visits after surgery until they grow completely and for facial trauma, and in some other cases, surgeons recommend revision surgery also. In the case of craniofacial surgery, a dentist or an oral surgeon should check the patients with a plastic surgeon to check whether the teeth and the jawbone are in proper alignment. Proper protection of repaired tissues is very important to have expeditious healing and to enable good nutrition.
