What is plastic surgery?

Many people think that plastic surgery is called plastic surgery because it comprises the use of artificial things. Well, that not true. Plastic surgery is a medical specialty that correct aesthetical and functional faults (due to illness, trauma, infection or tumor) of a person and recreate the facial and body tissue malformations. Plastic surgery rebuilds and enhance appearance as well as functional ability.

Difference between plastic and cosmetic surgery:

Plastic and cosmetic surgeries are closely similar specialties but technically there is a fine difference. Plastic surgery is defined as a surgical specialty devoted to reconstruction of facial and body defects due to any diseases, trauma, and burn or birth disorders. Plastic surgery is regenerative in nature and it is considered to rectify dysfunctional areas of the body. The goal of plastic surgery is to fix and reconstruct the defects to deliver a natural appearance and restore normal function of the body part on which the procedure is performed.

Cosmetic surgery is focused on enhancing the appearance through surgical and non surgical techniques. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on all areas of face, neck, and body. The aim of cosmetic surgery is to boost the appearance of individual aesthetically by improving the proportion, symmetry and aesthetic appeal of a specific part of the body. Cosmetic surgery is elective. Cosmetic surgery is practiced by variety of medical fields including plastic surgeons.

Types of plastic surgery procedures:

Breast reconstruction: the goal of breast reconstruction is to rebuild normal shape, symmetry and visibility of the breasts. In case, only one breast is affected, that can also be recreated by plastic surgery. It involves various plastic surgery techniques.

Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty): a breast reduction procedure is performed to eliminate extra skin and fat tissue to get a perfect breast size in proportion to your body. It also diminishes the discomfort associated with excessively heavy breasts.

Cleft lip and palate repair: cleft lip and palate (incomplete formation of the upper lip or roof of the mouth) are very common birth abnormalities in children. Plastic surgery reinstalls the function of lips and mouth producing a more normal appearance. It also raises the child’s ability to speak, eat, breathe and hear.

Congenital anomalies (birth defects): these abnormalities often hinder the normal function of patient. Plastic surgery corrects these birth defects to reestablish proper function and appearance.

Gender confirmation surgeries (transfeminine/transmasculine): the goal of these procedures is to give transgender individuals the physical appearance and functional abilities of the gender they want to be. Gender confirmation surgeries involve various procedures to achieve their desires including facial feminization surgery (more feminine appearance), transfeminine top surgery (enhance the shape and size of breasts), transfeminine bottom surgery (reconstruct male genitalia into female), facial masculinization surgery (more masculine appearance), transmasculine top surgery (remove the breast tissue to create masculine chest), transmasculine bottom surgery (reconstruct female genitalia into male).

Jaw straightening (orthognathic surgery): orthognathic procedure can be life changing if you are experiencing functional issues or want to improve appearance. It is performed to the fitting of teeth, to normalize or maximize the facial proportions and treat obstructive sleep apnea. Jaw straightening surgery includes a series of procedures on the lower jaw, upper jaw and chin to better both function and facial imbalances.

Body contouring (panniculectomy): it is performed to remove hanging fat and skin from the lower abdomen area to provide a smoother abdominal contour. It differs from a tummy tuck procedure. Technically, the results are permanent.

Ear surgery (otoplasty): ear surgery can correct the birth defects or abnormalities due to injury or trauma in the ear structures. It can also enhance the position, proportion and shape of the ear.

Eyelid surgey (blepharoplasty): eyelid surgery can enhance the appearance of your eyes and correct functional problems. It can treat sagging skin around the eyes that can affect the natural shape and vision of eyes, fat deposits that cause swelling in eyes, under eye bags, hanging lower eyelids, and it can regenerate the surrounding area of eyes.

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty): it can correct nasal defects, breathing problems and boost facial harmony of the nose. Nose surgery is performed for reshaping of nose as well as to improve the functioning of nose.

Types of cosmetic surgery procedures:

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty): it is performed to increase the size of the breasts. It also restores breast volume and improves the natural breast size.

Breast lift (mastopexy):  this procedure raises the breasts by excluding the extra skin to reshape the breasts. It gives you perfectly shaped breasts.

Liposuction (lipoplasty): liposuction reshapes specific body parts by removing extra fat deposits and enhances body proportion and shape. Liposuction can reshape thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, waist, upper arm, chest area, calves, neck, chin and cheeks.

Body contouring: body contouring procedures remove extra sagging skin and fat improving the shape of underlying tissues. These procedures gives you better proportionate body appearance and smoother body contours.

Body lift: a body lift includes abdomen, buttocks and thighs. It eliminates extra fat and sagging skin. It can also improve irregular and dimpled skin surface increasing the shape and tone of the body.

Buttock enhancement: it involves buttock augmentation and buttock lift surgery. It improves the shape and size of buttocks or adds volume for better contouring.

Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty):  this procedure removes excess skin from the abdominal area and restore separated muscles offering a resistant and smoother abdominal profile.

Dermal fillers: these are injectables. These fillers can plump thin lips, soften facial creases, enhance shallow contours, remove wrinkles and reduce the appearance of scars.

The primary goal of plastic surgery is to restore the function of a particular body part and improving the physical appearance of a body part is secondary function.  It can help you get rid of functional abnormalities due to injury, trauma or any birth defects which affect your function and appearance. It can treat the areas of body (breast or face) which are damaged by cancerous tissues. It involves restoration, reconstruction and alteration of human body. Injury, accidents or other bad events can affect your body shape and function; in that case, plastic surgery can help you return back to your original shape and normal function. Plastic surgery can improve self esteem, social confidence and life quality by fixing the various body issues.

Uses of cosmetic surgery:

Cosmetic surgery is performed to achieve perfect looks and aesthetics. The major goal of cosmetic surgery is to improve the physical appearance of different parts of the body.
